Fragrant Harbour by John Lanchester
Set mainly in Hong Kong (Heung gong = Fragrant harbour) - incidentally my birthplace - this tells the story of four people: Tom Stewart, who leaves England to seek his fortune, Sister Maria, a beautiful and uncompromising Chinese nun, Dawn Stone, an English journalist and Matthew Ho, a young Chinese entrepreneur. Their interwoven stories blend into the 20th century history of class ridden and racially divided Hong Kong and its brutal awakening by the Japanese occupation. Recommended!
