King of the Confessors by Thomas Hoving
A racy account by a former director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of how he, as a young curator, tracked down a medieval ivory cross now one of the prize exhibits at The Cloisters, the amazing extension of the Met at the end of Manhattan Island. I found the story a thriller as well as an insight into the museum and fine art world as it was and perhaps still is.
