The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz
This was published in 1956 but I have only just come across it. It is the story of six men and a girl who escape from Siberia - cross the Gobi Desert and Tibet to reach India and freedom. They don't all make it. What amazes me is the human body's stamina and how determination wins through - it is almost unbelievable. The actual writing is not the greatest but I couldn't put it down.
