On Pilgrimage by Jennifer Lash
I was at school with the author and knew her well, though I didn't really appreciate her originality and powers of perception. After an operation for the cancer which eventually killed her she set off alone on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. This is a lively and moving account of her long journey through France, with numerous stops at places of pilgrimage both famous and almost unknown, on a quest for her long lost faith.
