Secret libraries, clandestine book clubs and banned books are the themes which run through the story of 2 young girls and their deep friendship. Their love of literature provides hope and solace as Warsaw and its people are annihilated by the Nazis. Death and destruction are given a light touch as the girls try to fight against the horrors of the occupation so the story seems a bit of a fairy tale but a good holiday read.
