The High Window by Raymond Chandler
A hard-hitting, fast-paced thriller set in California in the 0s though seemingly timeless. The hero, Philip Marlowe, is an American private-eye, best played by Humphrey Bogart in movie versions of Chandler's novels. Reading this one again after a 30 year interval, I was immediately struck by the excellent style of the writing. Very direct, witty, elegant, not a word out of place or superfluous. What a joy to read!
