Bitter Lemons by Lawrence Durrell
With his characteristic verbal fireworks this poet/author conjures up a picture of 1950s Cyprus as a paradise. He settled down in a small village, renovated an old house and, with his fluent Greek, quickly made friends amongst the locals. Sadly the latent Greek/Turkish conflict exploded into violence and the colonial government for which Durrell worked as information officer was succeeded by direct military rule. He decided it was time for him to leave.
