Books by Vikram Seth

A Suitable Boy
Delightful writing in plain, narrative form, of the unsettling, early years of Indian independence. Absorbing details; funny; touches of pathos; colour a great feature: saris, flowers and pale skin - desirable in a suitable boy. You are kept guessing to the very end. The lack of privacy is startling in these three endearing families' entangled lives. I had already done by page what the poet Amit advises on page 1,371. Read it to find out!

A Suitable Boy
Yes, I'm sure everyone's read it but - needing something hefty to take away over the Christmas holiday - I decided to see if it would take re-reading and I can say emphatically that it does. I was surprised how much rich detail I had forgotten or even remembered wrongly and re-discovering such inimitable characters as Mrs Rupa Mehra was pure delight. This is definitely one book I would take to a desert island - inexhaustible pleasure!

A Suitable Boy
I missed this when it won prizes several years ago, but certainly recommend it as a great fireside companion for the remainder of winter! Don't be put off by the daunting thickness of the tome! It is an engaging tale of the intertwining of families, their personal and political relationships after Partition in India. I haven't finished it yet, but have friends waiting to borrow it, and one of them has read it twice already!

An Equal Music
A book about love lost and found and lost again set against a background of music. I found it totally absorbing and it made me want to rush out and buy all the CDs of the pieces he mentions.
(Jenny Baker - bwl 1 January 2000)

An Equal Music
A novel for all who enjoy a well written story but this one is enhanced by its musical background. The love story of Julia and Michael (love that is lost, found but ultimately denied) is paralleled by the musical theme. It is a beautifully written story which resonates when you finish it rather like a piece of music echoes in your head long after a concert.
(Christine Miller - bwl 15 October 2002)

Two Lives
At times I found myself disappointingly bored by the details of humdrum daily life that fill many of these 502 pages, though significant events and situations are vividly described. The remarkable stories of Seth's much loved uncle and his wife, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany whose family was tragically wiped out during the war, would have been twice as effective at half the length. However, reviewers don't agree with me - they loved it!
