Electricity |
What strikes one especially about this subtle novel is its construction, which places a complicated love story against life in Early Victorian England - just reaping the benefits of the Industrial Revolution. With more than a hint of the Gothic novel, the relationships in her life are portrayed by the narrator in a clinically objective, sophisticatedly modern manner. Rich in detail and colour, it's a 'must', even for those who don't usually read fiction. (Kathie Somerwil Ayrton - bwl 8 April 2001) |

Elizabeth Bowen - Portrait of a Writer |
A vivid and well-rounded view of this distinguished Anglo-Irish novelist, short story writer and literary figure of the 0s - 0s. Interesting too on the position and way of life of the Anglo-Irish and their decline. The author devotes a good deal of space to Bowen's works and my appetite was whetted for a re-read of old favourites such as 'The Heat of the Day' set in London during the second world war.
