Newton and the Counterfeiter |
When William Chaloner began his extraordinary life as a counterfeiter of the King's (rather suspect) currency he probably never envisioned his bravado taking him almost to the position of running the Mint itself. A self-proclaimed 'expert', he hoped to remove the current incumbent after questioning and deriding his abilities. Unfortunately for Chaloner the new incumbent was Isaac Newton, forced by finances into a public position and not in the mood to have his abilities questioned. (Clive Yelf - bwl 61 Summer 2011) |
