This intimate novel about a German family in Bavaria in 1932/3 was published in 1934. Carson was British but knew Bavaria well and was aware of the lack of purpose for many, young men particularly, that Hitler was all too happy to exploit. It starts with an almost perfect Christmas Eve scene, snow falling, the house decorated but with a photo of Hitler on the piano – a warning of what is to come.
