Coming Home
In 1935, 14-year-old Judith Dunbar is left at boarding school in England when her mother and sister join her father in Singapore. In a coming-of-age story spanning some 10 years (and nearly 1000 pages), Judith weathers life, love and loss against a well-drawn backdrop of WW II and a continuing search for a place she can call home. Against expectations, I found it unputdownable.

The Shell Seekers
A family saga set mainly in England during the 20th century. 'The Shell Seekers': a picture by a Victorian painter, Lawrence Stern, given to his daughter Penelope as a wedding present. In her old age its dramatic rise in value excites the cupidity of several of her children, revealing their true colours to Penelope. This sparks recollections of her past. A good story with convincing characters and twists and turns that kept me spellbound.

Winter Solstice
This is not a book to set the world on fire, but is enjoyable with a strong 'feel good' factor. No nightmares or introspection after reading this story. Elfrida leaves Hampshire to live in Scotland to help console her friend and neighbour, after a tragedy befalls his family. Various other people join their household, and all their personal problems are solved in the nicest possible way. A warm gentle book.

Winter Solstice
Rosamunde Pilcher, well-known for her capable story-telling, in this, her most recent novel, has not only provided another excellent read but one that is deeper than some of her others. The plot is well constructed and the characters, arresting in their originality, are well-rounded, engaging and very real. Written with humour, warmth and genuine sympathy for the human condition, this is just the thing to take on holiday or on a long journey.
