Books by Paula Hawkins

Into the Water
I thoroughly enjoyed this second novel by the author of The Girl on the Train (bwl 82). Inevitably the two books will be compared but this one is not so much a suspenseful thriller but rather an analysis of a small town's history, exploring witchcraft, suicide and murder, perpetuating ongoing uncertainty surrounding the latest mysterious death in The Drowing Pool - the mystery is further confused by the multiple perspectives of the narrative, causing difficuly in trusting any of the characters.

Into the Water
The 'drowning pool' of this murder mystery is the setting of long ago witch drownings; modern day suicides; and unresolved murders. It is the place where 'troublesome women' are disposed of . . . The twists and turns of the story make it a real page turner right up to the very disquieting revelation on the last page. Excellent storytelling.

The Girl on the Train
Rachel, a self-obsessed fantasist, sees from the train the perfect couple - Jess and Jason, really Megan and Scott - who live up the road from where she lived, where her ex still lives with new wife and baby. When Rachel gets drunk she does irrational things, which she only half remembers. She's sure she did get off the train but did she see what happened when one of them goes missing? Sounds great but Rachel was so implausible, I didn't care.
