A Thousand Feasts |
Not a recipe book but a collection of moments of pleasure, memories and food. I admire Slater’s writing and the sheer joy he finds in the smallest of things, be it a piece of fruit or a plant. The descriptions of his travels to Japan and Korea ensure you share the moment with him and I almost feel that I have sat in his garden such are his descriptive powers. A pleasure to read.

The Christmas Chronicles |
A glorious appreciation and evocation of winter and Christmas. The book includes personal memories, historical facts, anecdotes and recipes. His pleasure in Christmases past and present is infectious. I was amused by his dislike (somewhat shared) of e-cards. I was utterly caught up in the sights, sounds and smells of these months. Also there is the bonus of additional, delicious recipes to try. I have noted to start reading it again in November this year! (Christine Miller - bwl 87 Winter 2018) |

Toast - The Story of a Boy's Hunger |
Just as The Child that Books Built (bwl 22) illustrated childhood and grief by association with the author's cultural life raft of literature, 'Toast' illustrates childhood and grief through the author's cultural life raft of food. Both are enjoyable to a large extent from the joy of recognition, which immediately places you on the side of the author. It's an entertaining read all right, but left me wondering what would be next - Autobiography by Toys? ...Songs? ...Role-models ...? (Clive Yelf - bwl 28 February 2005) |
