Hope against Hope |
Her husband was the poet Osip Mandelstam who fell foul of the infamous Stalin with a critical poem which spelt doom for him. This is a classic memoir of heroic proportions. The regime tried to stamp out culture and memory. Her surviving testimony is proof of its abject failure to do so. Read it as a warning from history. (David Graham - bwl 82 Autumn 2016) |
