Books by Justin Cartwright

Lion Heart
Maybe too many threads to this novel with family, spying, politics and romances/affairs, together with the interweaving of Richard the Lionheart's return from the Holy Land and the relic of the Holy Cross. Richie Cathar seeks to understand his father, his relationship with his 'true love', Noor, and subsequent lovers and is an overly self-absorbed character for me. However, Cartwright does write well and reminds us how long our 'interference' in the Middle East has been.

Other People's Money
Cartwright's well observed (though rather cartoonish) characters are all affected by the recent banking crisis as a struggling old family bank resorts to shady practices. It's an enjoyable chase around Antibes, London and Cornwall; sometimes funny and farcical, but it also looks thoughtfully at how all the family members try to maintain their integrity while seeking love and success in a changing world. I found it very entertaining, and more assured than his earlier novels.

The Promise of Happiness
Set in the United States and Cornwall, this is the story of five people - all one family - and how they each cope with an incident that affects all their lives. The characterisation is excellent (you may recognize traits in yourself or in your friends). The writing is almost blank verse, though you wouldn't know it, so fine does it flow.
