This British politician (b. 1930) describes, straightforwardly and unpretentiously, the main stages in his life: King's Scholar at Eton, national service in the Artillery, Cambridge, Diplomatic Service, political assistant to Prime Minister Heath, MP, and several times minister before just failing to reach the top of 'the greasy pole' following Margaret Thatcher's departure in 1990. Very informative on the functioning of these different worlds. (Jeremy Swann - bwl 44 February 2008) |
