The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street |
This is a masterly evocation of Shakespeare's London during which he was a lodger in a house owned by one Mountjoy a French tire maker. He was involved in a matrimonial lawsuit in which the great playwright was a witness. His signature is on his witness statement, Charles Nicholl gives one a vivid sense of the man and his world. Mountjoy is a character in Henry V. Not a coincidence surely. (David Graham - bwl 61 Summer 2011) |
